The Creston girls turned in a strong performance on Wednesday to finish second in the Class 3-A state golf tournament at Coldwater Links in Ames.

The Panthers were in third place after the first day, trailing second-place Gilbert by seven strokes. Creston (690) edged the Tigers (691) by the slimmest of margins for the runner-up spot when everyone’s scores were tallied. Washington won with a 662.

Ashton Carter of Creston improved from an 88 to a 78 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for ninth with a 166. Rylie Driskell (167) tied for 13th overall and Sophia Groumoutis (170) tied for 18th. Sydney Hartsock (91) and Taylor Buxton (96) had one counted score on each of the days.

Atlantic’s Alyssa Ginther tied Carter for ninth with a 166 of her own.

In other individual top 10 finisher from western Iowa came in 1-A at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, where Sammi Jahde of CAM finished eighth with a 169.
