COUNCIL BLUFFS — Tyler Moen of Atlantic had never run an open 400 meters in high school.

It was the second open 400 this season for Jaeda Wilson of Glenwood.

Both juniors shined in the event at the Hawkeye Ten Conference meet on Thursday at Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

Moen won the 100 (11.30), 200 (22.89) and 400 (50.05) and ran the third leg of the victorious 1,600 relay (3:27.25).

Wilson won the 100 (13.06) and 400 (1:00.30), finished second in the 200 (26.93) and led off the winning 1,600 relay (4:07.87).

Both athletes led their teams to Hawk-10 titles on a beautiful night for a meet. The Glenwood girls won their fifth league crown in six years by a 193-115 count over runner-up Atlantic. The Atlantic boys scored 145, which was 20 more than second-place Glenwood. At the end of the meet, the Glenwood girls gathered in a circle and talked about their coaches. Wilson became emotional.

“They are some of the best coaches I’ve ever had,’’ she said. “They just push us to be the best. They’re not too aggressive with it. They just know what we can do and they have faith in us.’’

Faust said the strong feelings among the coaches for their athletes is mutual.

“If you were to look at their GPAs and just look at the sheet on their activities,’’ he said. “That group is just full of super high achieving people. But the coolest thing, if you could just be around them on a daily basis, is that they’re just really good people. They buy into the team thing. In a sport like track, that’s hard to do.’’

Also for Glenwood, Drake Relays 400 hurdles champion Janette Schraft won that event (1:07.97), along with the 800 (2:22.38) and 1,500 (4:54.98).

There were two other double-individual girls winners: junior Lauren Payne of Lewis Central in the shot put (42-5) and discus (126-4), and sophomore Haley Rasmussen of Atlantic in the 200 (26.57) and long jump (16-10¼).Atlantic boys coach Jordan Mullen is in his first year as the head man, after serving several years as an assistant. He fought back his emotions as he spoke of his squad.

“Two, three weeks ago was a pivotal week,’’ he said. “That just fired us up. I use the (term) ‘firing on all cylinders,’ and we just kept rolling. We came into Monday and we absolutely destroyed that meet. I didn’t think we could win Monday at our home meet. We’re ready at the right time of year.’’

Only three 3-A athletes had run faster than Moen’s 50.05 entering Thursday.

“Coach said it was the best for the team, so I was like, ‘Ok, I’ll go do whatever the team needs,’’’ he said. “I came out and I won it, and I was surprised. We knew we could get another year up on the conference championship banner.’’

Said Mullen: “He’s an animal. He’s a true stallion.’’

Chase Mullenix of Atlantic also won four golds on the day, taking the 800 (2:00.39) and running on the winning sprint medley, distance medley and 1,600 relays. Logan Jones of Lewis Central won the discus at 179 feet, 10½ inches, which will be the best in Iowa this season unless someone threw farther on Thursday.

“Everything felt good,’’ Jones said. “I was warming up and doing everything I needed to. I just let that one fly.’’
