Abraham Lincoln girls

Abraham Lincoln's Jillian Shanks scored 11 points in the win.

The Abraham Lincoln girls entered the Class 5-A Region 4 opening round with the goal of making every Thomas Jefferson possession difficult.

Mission accomplished.

The Lynx defense locked down the visiting Yellow Jackets from the outset, holding T.J. to a season-low offensive output in a 38-20 win to advance to the second round.

Lincoln shut out Jefferson in the first quarter and held the Jackets' top scorer, Allison Schubert (15.2 ppg), to just four points.

Jefferson was just 8 of 41 (19.5 percent) from the field in the game.

A.L. coach Chad Schaa said his team was able to take care of everything it wanted to achieve on defense.

“Our defense did a nice job of doing some things that we wanted to do. We wanted to put a lot of pressure on our half-court sets to make just every trip for them just tough.

“We feel like our defense can cause some frustration, and it was probably one of our best defensive efforts tonight,” Schaa said.

Thomas Jefferson coach Devin Schoening said his team played tight.

“They did what they needed to do defensively to frustrate us offensively, and we were never able to get into any sort of flow. We just couldn't get going,” he said.

Schubert, the all-time city leader in 3-pointers, was 1 of 8 from the floor and 0 for 4 from long range.

Schaa credited Julia Wagoner, who had Schubert as her defensive assignment.

“Her goal was to just to make sure (Schubert) didn't get to shoot and just play tough defense. She did that, and all the girls on their assignments did phenomenal,” Schaa said.

Schoening said it was a battle all night for Schubert.

“When she would drive, they would get arms around her, and she was having a hard time either passing the ball out of that or getting good shots up with all those bodies around her,

“We know that she's a great player. Unfortunately, tonight wasn't her night,” Schoening said.

Lincoln, which improved to 12-10, led 16-6 after the first half.

A.L. opened the second half with a 6-0 run to widen its lead to 22-6 with 5:53 left in the third quarter.

That's all the points the Lynx would need to secure the win.

Senior Alexis Exley provided a Jefferson highlight with just seconds remaining in the game when she sank a 3-pointer on her only shot attempt of the season.

“She didn't always want to play,” Schoening said of Exley. “But she was here and did everything we asked her to do. It was nice to see her get into the books.

Morgan Gant, the other Jacket senior who averaged 5.1 points per game this season, scored the only T.J. field goal of the third quarter with 15 seconds left in the period.

“Morgan has turned into as good of a leader as a team can possibly have. While she doesn't have the statistics, we're going to struggle to replace her next year,” Schoening said.

The Yellow Jacket's season ended at 12-10.
