COUGAR COMEBACK: Class B Omaha Gross didn’t beat a team in its class until Jan. 8, then pulled off the stunner of the season by beating No. 3 Beatrice at home Tuesday night. It was the third win in a row for coach Tim Powers’ team, now 8-9, with a game Friday at No. 10 Omaha Roncalli.

BEST BET FOR CHIEFTAINS?: Bellevue East is the only winless team in Class A, and chances to avoid an 0-for season are running out on the 0-13 Chieftains. But North Platte visits on Saturday, and the Bulldogs (2-13) are in similar straits. They haven’t beaten a Class A team yet, either.

SNOW-OUTS?: If the early weather forecasts hold, next Tuesday’s slate of games could be wiped out across a wide section of the state. Those that could be delayed include Millard West at Omaha Westside, Creighton Prep at Millard North and Bennington at Roncalli. Signing day on Wednesday also could be impacted.

UNPREDICTABLE TITANS: Papillion-La Vista South pulled a stunner Tuesday night by defeating top-ranked Millard West, but can the Titans keep that momentum? Papio South had lost five of seven before defeating Omaha North and then the Wildcats.

TIGERS ON A TEAR: Following that loss by Millard West, Fremont could be in line for No. 1 in the ratings. The Tigers (13-4) haven’t lost a game to in-state competition since the season opener, but they’ll need to pass road tests this weekend against Bellevue East and Omaha North.

SEEKING TOP-SEVEN FINISH: Class A coaches are undoubtedly checking the NSAA wild-card points in hopes of finishing no worse than seventh, thereby guaranteeing a host slot in districts. Lincoln Pius X, Lincoln East and Millard North are just outside that top seven right now.
