WAVERLY — The York boys’ basketball team’s starting five were headed to the bench in Thursday night’s game at Waverly with just under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

The early exit had a lot to do with a 24-6 third-quarter scoring spree that opened a six-point half time lead of 27-21 to 51-27 at the end of the third quarter.

York went on to post the 61-36 win in boys prep action on Thursday night.

York came into the second half shooting 11 of 26 from the field for 42 percent, but in the second half turned up the heat as they were 15 of 24 for 63 percent and finished at 52 percent, 26 of 50.

York jumped to an early 13-2 advantage behind Brady Danielson who scored six of his 14 points in the first quarter.

Waverly fought back to make it 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and with 7:01 to play in the second quarter made it 15-9 on a Ben Carter basket scored all nine of his points in the first half.

York opened the lead back to double digits at 24-13, but Waverly’s Noah Stoddard and Carter got free to cut the York lead to 26-21 with a minute to play in the half.

In the third quarter it was senior Garrett Snodgrass scoring 10 of his game-high 15 points, while both Danielson and Reid Hoffmann finished with 12 each scored five points in the 24-6 run.

Waverly struggled from the field as they were just 15 of 40 in the game for 37 percent and 3 of 21 on 3-point attempts.

Another huge factor in the Duke’s win was their 41-12 dominating performance on the glass.

Waverly's Jay Adams added eight points and Stoddard finished with seven.

York was 5 of 6 from the charity stripe, and the Vikings were 3 of 6.

York had 12 turnovers with five of those coming in the fourth quarter, long after the starters had exited the floor. The Vikings were charted with 13 miscues.

York (2-0) and the No. 2-rated team in Class B will be back on their home floor on Saturday night to take on the 2-1 Lexington Minutemen.
