York sophomore Maddie Portwine outran the Waverly defense for an errant pass and scoops in the lay-in to cut the Waverly lead to 5-4 with 4:41 to play in the first quarter at Waverly on Thursday night.

WAVERLY — The York Dukes withstood an early Waverly scoring run, but not a second one.

The Waverly Vikings, rated as the No. 8 team in Class B scored the first six points of the third quarter and rolled to a 46-30 win over the No. 5 York Dukes on Thursday night in girls hoop action.

York had more than just turnover issues as their outside game netted them very little.

York was 0 for 13 from 3-point range and most of their scoring came from point-blank range in the blocks.

The Vikings (2-0) led 5-0 early, but sophomore Maddie Portwine on an inbounds pass flipped it off the Waverly defenders back and she scored the Duke’s first two points.

Portwine scored the first six points for York and when senior Natalia Dick drove inside for the short jumper the Duke’s had drawn even at 8-8 with 1:06 to play in the first quarter.

Waverly and York were still tied at 11-11 through the first eight minutes, but Waverly took the lead for good with 2:39 to play in the first half on two free throws by Averie Lambrecht.

The lead grew to 20-13 with Sydney Schernikau knocking down one of two free throws.

York pulled to within 20-15 as Portwine recorded the steal and lay-in for two of her team-high 10 points. York senior Natalia Dick added nine points.

Lambrecht was the leading scorer for the Vikings with 10, while Abigail Clark added nine.

Waverly opened the third quarter with six straight points to lead 26-15 and extended their cushion to 37-22 through three quarters.

York continued to play the defensive pressure which did force 22 Waverly turnovers, but 2 of 8 from the field in the fourth quarter kept them from making up any ground.

York also struggled on the glass as they were outrebounded 36-28.

Waverly was 14 of 48 from the field, they knocked down 4 of 23 3-pointers and finished 14 of 26 at the charity stripe.

York was 11 of 36, they missed all 13 3-point shots and made good on 8 of 14 free throws.

York (1-1) is back home on Saturday night as they host the Lexington Minutemaids.
