Six teams crowned champions at Nebraska high school girls state basketball tournament

Hastings St. Cecilia's Lexi Vertin holds up the net after winning the Class C-2 championship.

LINCOLN — In an action-packed weekend at Pinnacle Bank Arena, six teams secured titles during the Nebraska high school girls state basketball tournament.

Millard North, Grand Island Northwest, Wahoo Neumann, Hastings St. Cecilia, Fremont Bergan and Wynot all won state championships.

In Class A, the Mustangs won their first state title in their 15th appearance at state. Lauren West scored 31 points to lead Millard North to a 62-52 win over Lincoln Southwest.

Grand Island Northwest claimed its first Class B girls basketball state title since 2014 and fourth all-time with a 48-43 win over Crete. Vikings junior Whitney Brown had 23 points and five steals. Crete junior Morgan Maly, a Creighton commit, scored 24 points in the loss.

The top-ranked Cavaliers earned a 45-29 victory over No. 4 Lincoln Christian in the Class C-1 title game. A 30-16 advantage in second half helped Neumann to the program's third championship (2009 and 2010) after the Cavaliers fell 40-37 in overtime to Columbus Scotus in last year's title game.

The Hawkettes pulled away in the fourth quarter to clinch a 63-45 win over Crofton in Class C-2. Lexi Vertin scored 17 points for Hastings St. Cecilia, which earned the program’s first state title since winning C-1 in 2011.

Haley Kempf scored a game-high 17 points to help Fremont Bergan win the program's first state title. The Knights defeated Dundy County-Stratton 36-27 to complete the volleyball-basketball championship sweep in the lowest-scoring D-1 final ever.

Wynot reclaimed the Class D-2 title from Falls City Sacred Heart, beating the Irish 39-38 only after a fourth-quarter tussle Saturday night. After leading by 14 in the first minute of the second half, the Blue Devils lost most of that cushion. When Rachel Magdanz sank a 3 with 1:36 left, Sacred Heart was trailing only 39-36.
