The top-seeded Potter-Dix girls basketball team captured the Class D-2, Sub-district 11 Tournament title with a 51-37 win over South Platte in the championship game on Thursday night at Gering High School.
The victory advances Potter-Dix (18-2) to next Friday’s D2-6 district final against Hyannis. Hyannis won the D2-12 sub-district title Thursday with a 47-30 win over Crawford.
Leading by just five at halftime, Potter-Dix outscored South Platte 23-14 in the second half to pull away. Potter-Dix head coach Jeff Einspahr said the play of his team in the second half was key.
“There was a big difference on how the girls played the second half of the game compared to the first half,” he said. “They came out and played loose and we were a little tight. We weren’t moving our feet. We we causing a lot of fouls. In the second half we just tried to calm them down and told them they needed to play better defense, be patient on offense and push the ball. Our offense is to push and push and wear them out a bit. In the secondn half we definitely got back to our style of play.”
The start of the game was in jeopardy after half of the gym lights went out during the National Anthem. The officials determined that there was just enough light to start the game.
Potter-Dix raced out to a 20-15 lead after the first quarter and held a 28-23 advantage at halftime. The Coyotes took control by outscoring the Blue Knights 15-5 in the third quarter. Potter-Dix’s lead grew to 43-28 after three quarters and remained in double figures the rest of the way.
Potter-Dix’s Audrey Juelfs scored a game-high 18 points. Dawson Sharman followed with 14 points for the Coyotes. Sharman hit four 3-pointers. Alexus Rozelle added nine points and Anna McLaughlin finished with six.
Juelfs and Rozelle led the Coyotes on the glass with nine rebounds each. Juelfs finished with a team-high nine assists. She and Payge Hoffman led Potter-Dix defensively with four steals each. McLaughlin finished with a team-high four blocks.
The Coyotes ended the game shooting 7 of 10 at the free throw line.
