Omaha Northwest coach Donnie Johnson

Donnie Johnson will coach the boys team at Omaha Northwest next season after taking the girls team to state for the first time since 1980.

Donnie Johnson, who took Omaha Northwest to its first appearance in the Class A girls basketball tournament since 1980, has been named the school’s boys basketball coach.

That position opened when Andy Webb was promoted to curriculum specialist and assistant athletic director.

Northwest Athletic Director Andrew Wane said Monday he hopes to have a new girls coach hired soon.

Johnson, a former Creighton player, was Omaha Benson’s boys coach for four years with three state tournament appearances before going to Northwest.
