In a clash between two top-tier Class A teams loaded with college-level talent, it was John Tonje’s 29-point performance that helped Omaha Central storm back from an 11-point deficit in the second half to a 68-65 victory over Millard North on Friday night.

The Eagles’ comeback was sparked by a stretch of ten straight points from John Tonje in the third quarter, capped by a steal and a breakaway dunk to take their first lead of the game at 52-49.

Omaha Central did not look back from that point on. “John was insane in that third quarter, he kept us in that game. When he came out with a minute left in the third (quarter) I knew I had to make something happen.” said Polk, who is now shouldered with even more scoring and playmaking duties while junior guard Latrell Wrightsell is injured. “That Skutt loss last week was a reality check for me that I have to step up and take on a much bigger role, missing a key player.”.

Guard Abe Hoskins had nine points and forward Tethloach Tut added eight for Omaha Central.

Millard North was led in scoring by Max Murrell who tallied 14 points on six-of-seven shooting and nine rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Jake Rueschhoff, who had 12 points and four assists, Bret Porter with 11 points, and Mason Jung and Hunter Sallis, each with 10 points and three steals.

Tonje, a 6-foot-5 wing, wasn’t going to back down from a Millard North team that, at times, rolls out four players over 6-foot-4, including sophomore star Hunter Sallis.

“I just treat it like any other game,” said Tonje. “I knew they had several high-caliber players, but I just need to go out and do what I need to, to help my team win.”

Junior guard Max Polk poured in 19 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field and four assists for Omaha Central.
