Final game marks ending, beginning for dad and son

Brady Delimont took back the state’s career 3-point record for Ainsworth after it had a two-year detour in Gibbon. Delimont, who will walk on at South Dakota next season, will play his final prep game on Monday.

LINCOLN — It’s family night at Monday’s Nebraska Coaches Association’s all-star basketball games at Lincoln North Star.

Brady Delimont of Ainsworth, who owns the boys state record for career 3-pointers, will be coached by his father, Brian, for the last time in the 8 p.m. boys game.

The doubleheader on NET2 begins at 6 p.m. with the girls game.

“It will be emotional, I think, and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Brady said.

“I’ve played for my dad for years. He’s been hard on me at times, but I appreciate everything he’s done for where I am today.”

Adding to the theme will be twins Landon and Bailey Zarybnicky of Beatrice. Bailey is in the girls game and Landon in the boys.

Brady Delimont is walking on at South Dakota, where he’s attended camps for many years, and plans on redshirting this season.

At Ainsworth, he played in two state tournaments and scored 1,888 points. His 320 treys topped the 309 set in 2014 by Gibbon’s Rylee Reinertson and returns the record back to the Bulldogs after Jesse Carr made 303 ending in 2008.

“I remember when I was in fourth, maybe third grade, and was manager for Jesse’s team that got to state,” Delimont said. “Watching them win it all made me work harder to get to that position.

“The record was a great accomplishment. Jesse had it, then Rylee did and now I have it.”

The state’s only Division I scholarship recruit in the Class of 2016, Triston Simpson of Lincoln North Star, is Delimont’s teammate this week — and then at South Dakota.

“I had heard of him, and now we’re roommates,” Delimont said. “I love the guy. He’s been working hard, a great player and student, and it will be great to play with him in this game and the next few years.”

Brian Delimont, who’s assisting Zac Foster of Adams Central, will be in his final prep game as well. He stepped down as the Bulldogs’ coach after the season, saying he has daughters coming through age-group basketball and the school had teaching openings that could fill the position.

“I’ll bow out and see if I can sit in the stands and keep my mouth shut,” he said. “I’ll keep doing the summer program in town and the Nebraska Select program, too.”

As for Monday’s game, “we got matched up with great guys,” he said. “And on the other side, there’s a legendary coach with Mike Weiss (from Wahoo Neumann). We’re looking forward to it.”

The NCA all-star series continues Tuesday with volleyball at North Star at 7 p.m., with coverage on NET2, and Wednesday with softball at 4 p.m. at Nebraska’s Bowlin Stadium. The nine-inning game will air on NET1.
