HARLAN, Iowa — Sean Minnehan is looking forward to another week of practice.

That’s what comes with winning a Class 2-A, Substate 8 final against defending state champion Treynor. The Carroll Kuemper coach watched his Knights (18-6) build a six-point halftime advantage and never relinquish the lead Saturday.

Carroll Kuemper allowed 22 second-half points and limited No. 4 Treynor (21-3) to 37 percent shooting from the field in a 56-46 victory.

The win puts the Knights in the state tournament for the 14th time in school history and the first time since 2013. They earned the No. 7 seed and will face second-seeded Western Christian (22-2) at 12:15 p.m. on March 8 in the opening round at Wells Fargo Arena.

Two years ago in this same substate game, Treynor pulled out a 56-51 victory over Kuemper that spoiled the Knights’ state hopes.

Minnehan, who is in his first year as head coach at Kuemper, was an assistant at the school the previous five years. That substate final two years ago provided the Knights with strong motivation.

“I’m sure most of our guys watched that game again. I know I did just as a reminder that you have to be focused and locked in,” Minnehan said.

“Our guys were just focused from the beginning. They had a great week of practice and were able to execute all the things we talked about on defense, and that’s what it came down to. Holding a team like this to 46 points was a phenomenal job on our guys’ part.”

Kuemper sophomore guard Parker Badding led the Knights with a game-high 16 points. Junior Matthew Dentlinger added 13 points and eight rebounds, and senior Blake Hinners chipped in 10 points.

Dentlinger was a freshman when the Knights fell to Treynor two years ago. Being on the other end of the outcome Saturday was especially satisfying.

“I always remembered it,” Dentlinger said. “That was a game we expected to win and didn’t. Now, we expected to win this game, but everyone else kind of expected us to lose. It just feels really good.”
