Fueled by 10 straight points from freshman Jake Orr in the fourth quarter, Omaha Roncalli captured the River Cities Conference championship with a 65-54 win over Elkhorn Mount Michael on Saturday.
The Knights, ranked eighth in Class B, outscored the Crimson Pride 34-28 in the second half, but Roncalli’s perimeter attack outlasted Mount Michael down the stretch.
Junior Shane Orr — Jake’s brother — added 17 points, including six in the fourth quarter for the Class B No. 6 Crimson Pride. The Orrs combined for 30 points, while Taiden Red had 12 and Jack Dotzler 10.
The Knights were led by three of their five sophomore starters: Joe Chouinard scored 16 points, Brad Bennett had 12 and Kyle Pelan added 10. Kyle — and the rest of his team — were playing with heavy hearts.
Mark Pelan, Kyle’s father, died Wednesday. A day later, Mount Michael earned a 48-44 upset win over Omaha Skutt to advance to the conference final.
