LYONS -- Class D No. 3 Howells-Dodge turned away from its trademark man-to-man defense, and it turned into the Jaguars taking control in the second quarter for a 57-45 victory over No. 7-rated Lyons-Decatur Northeast here Friday.

The Jaguars switched into a 1-3-1 zone defense, and it resulted in the host Cougars being limited to 11 points over more than 14 minutes that allowed H-D to build a 51-27 lead.

LDNE did all it could to come back in the fourth quarter. Brianne Haskell finished with 19 points -- eight in the fourth quarter -- along with five assists and six steals, including a 3-pointer with 2:40 left to cap a 10-0 run that suddenly put the Cougars within 55-45. But LDNE was held scoreless the rest of the night in suffering its first loss of the season.

H-D took advantage of some clutch shooting to build the big lead.

Chelsea Bayer, who finished with 15 points and four rebounds on 6 of 9 shooting from the field, banked in a 3-pointer for a 17-16 H-D lead with 5:50 to go in the half, and Emily Ritzdorf followed with another 3-pointer.

Sam Brester, who finished with a team-high 19 points and game-high nine rebounds, pitched in another bucket for a 22-16 lead. Twin sister Kalli Brester put a bow on the first half with a steal and layup for a 33-20 halftime lead.
