Sam Griesel

Lincoln East grad Sam Griesel along with three other former prep standouts will play in the NCAA tournament.

While no college teams from the state will play in the NCAA tournament, Nebraska is still represented in the Big Dance. Four former high school standouts from Nebraska are in the tourney.

North Dakota State has two former Nebraskans: Sam Griesel and Jared Samuelson.

Griesel, a freshman from Lincoln East, averages six points per game and scored a season-high 20 in the Summit League semifinal against Western Illinois. Samuelson, a Gretna grad, is averaging 7.2 points and played in all 33 games his junior year for the Bison.

NDSU is in Wednesday’s First Four game at 5:40 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio. The Bison play North Carolina Central for the No. 16 seed in the East Region. The winner advances to face top-seeded Duke.

Two Omaha Central grads will also end their college careers in the NCAA tournament.

Louisville’s Akoy Agau will help the seventh seed Cardinals take on No. 10 seed Minnesota in the East Region on Thursday. The forward, who transferred back after starting his career at Louisville then leaving for Georgetown, is averaging two rebounds per game.

Tre’Shawn Thurman, who transferred from UNO to Nevada, helped the Wolf Pack secure a No. 7 seed in the West Region. The 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, starting 28 of the team’s 33 games. He scored a season-high 22 in November against Massachusetts.

Nevada will play No. 10 Florida on Thursday.
