Lincoln — Points weren’t easy to come by early for either team as Potter-Dix kept things close and ended the opening eight minutes with a 9-7 lead.
Things cooled off quickly for the Coyotes, who scored seven points in the second and third quarters combined as Falls City Sacred Heart had big second and fourth quarters — 15 before halftime and 16 in the final eight minutes — to hand Potter-Dix a loss in the school’s first state tournament game since 1990.
Potter-Dix went almost 11 minutes between field goals after not scoring with less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter. A layup by Alexus Rozelle with 3:02 to go in the third ended that drought.
Scoring points in the third quarter also was a struggle for the Irish, though they built their 22-14 halftime lead to 29-16 heading into the fourth.
That’s when Sacred Heart got rolling, especially in the final four minutes to finish the game with an 8-1 run.
Senior guard Jade Hill, who led all scorers with 19 points, said a more consistent offensive showing will be needed in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal at the Devaney Center against Exeter-Milligan.
“We didn’t come out very sharp,” Hill said. “We didn’t start playing like we can until second, third, fourth quarter. Our defense is always pretty good, but our offense is where sometimes we struggle. Overall, I know that we can play better.”
