Calen Protaskey delivered the big hit Wednesday night as the American Legion team from Omaha Creighton Prep stayed on its late-season roll.
Protaskey belted a three-run homer to help Five Points Bank (Prep) post a 7-2 home victory over KB Building Services (Omaha Westside). It was the 16th win in 18 games for the Junior Jays, who move to 24-7.
The Warriors, champions of the Legion’s Metro League, fall to 35-5.
“It was a good late-summer game,’’ Five Points coach Pat Mooney said. “Everybody is trying to get ready for the Area tournaments.’’
Mooney’s squad went ahead in the first inning on an RBI single by Logan Clark. Five Points extended its lead in the third with the help of Protaskey, the Junior Jays’ catcher.
After Clark smacked a two-out RBI double, Matt Keating followed with a single. With two runners aboard, Protaskey delivered his three-run homer over the fence in left.
“Calen opened things up for us,’’ Mooney said. “He came through with the big one.’’
That was more than enough offense for Five Points starter Keating, who did not yield a hit in four innings. The Warriors nicked him for a run in the fourth without the benefit of a hit.
“Matt was dynamite for three innings,’’ Mooney said. “He wasn’t quite as sharp in the fourth, but we had a pretty long inning before that.’’
KB scored a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Grant Tagge, but Five Points responded with two in the bottom of the inning. One scored on a wild pitch and another when Evan Laney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Warriors put a runner on base in the seventh, but with one out, first baseman CJ Wolfe turned an unassisted double play to end the game.
Eric Allbery had a pair of doubles for the Junior Jays, and Clark had two RBIs while reaching base four times.
Mooney said the victory would give his team some momentum as it heads north for Friday’s start of the 96-team Gopher Classic in suburban Minnesota.
“We’re on a nice tear right now,’’ he said. “Hopefully we can keep it going up there.’’
