The mercury hovered around six degrees Farenheit at 8:30 a.m. Monday, about the time shoppers began lining up for the store's grand opening, which promised free backscratchers and shopping bags to the first 1,000 people through the doors.
The new Papillion store was scheduled to open at 10 a.m., "but we opened earlier--people were standing in the cold," store manager Brooke Spilman said.
Pier 1 sells furniture, home decor and gifts. The new Papillion store is the company's fourth Nebraska location.
The 8,250 square-foot Shadow Lake store is one of the company's "new concept stores" and the first of its kind in the state. It features natural-colored tiles, a rustic ceiling, and lighted shelves -- intended to help customers visualize how an item might look in their own home, the company said.
If you've got an itch to shop -- or just an itch, Pier 1, which also sells backscratchers, is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
