Iowa-based Fareway Stores Inc. announced Tuesday that it has properties under contract on which to build new stores, including one in Omaha.

The company said it would build on the northeast corner of 132nd and Fort Streets to relocate the store at 3070 N. 90th St. The new location is about five miles northwest of the current store.

Fareway officials said building new stores will provide expanded category sections and efficient store layouts as well as sustainability initiatives, such as LED lighting and closed-door coolers.

The existing store on 90th is scheduled to close in August 2019; replacement locations in Omaha and elsewhere will begin opening in spring 2020. All existing employees will be allowed to transfer to another location until the new stores open, a Fareway statement said.

Fareway has two other Omaha locations and one store each in Papillion and Council Bluffs.
