Kmart at 50th and L Streets is closing.

The store is expected to close in mid-January, Sears Holdings Corp., the chain’s owner, said in a statement to The World-Herald. A liquidation sale will begin Oct. 26.

“We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced,” the statement said.

Opened in 1968, it is the last Kmart store in Omaha. The Kmart in Council Bluffs will remain open, an employee there said.

Eligible employees at the 50th and L location will receive severance, the corporate statement said, and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.
