Omaha’s original J.C. Penney store — originally known as Penney’s — opened in 1933 on downtown’s bustling 16th Street.

That store, shown above, may be long gone, but the J.C. Penney that opened 50 years ago at the then-new Westroads Mall, near 102nd Street and West Dodge Road, still remains.

Other Omaha-area stores are in Council Bluffs, Shadow Lake Town Center and Oak View Mall. Back in 1967, you could get a pair of men’s wingtips at J.C. Penney for $19.99 — with a leather heel and a steel shank, according to an ad in The World-Herald.

Fifty years later, a pair of wingtips at Penney can run as high as $110.
