With The Diner eatery shuttered since last summer, the stage was set for construction to start on the proposed Marriott hotel scheduled to replace it at an Old Market corner.

To date, though, the deteriorating shell of the retro Diner landmark remains, and there’s construction fencing around the site, but no sign of the new Moxy hotel rising at 12th and Harney Streets.

Raj Patel of Hawkeye Hotels of Iowa said his company still plans to move forward. He said his team is working to bring down construction costs. “It is a complex site to work on, but we look forward to submitting a building application to the city in the near future and proceed forward with construction.”

The Diner had leased the property for some 30 years when owner Michael Henery sold to Hawkeye. City Planning Director Dave Fanslau said earlier that the corner had been underutilized and that the master plan calls for urban density.
