Both Omaha Sports Authority stores will close, store employees are telling shoppers.

The retailer is shuttering nearly a third of its 450 locations and has laid off 100 employees at its Englewood, Colorado, headquarters as it faces potential bankruptcy, the Denver Post reported this week.

Employees at the local stores, at 885 S. 72nd St. and 17021 Evans Plaza, declined to discuss the closures, saying they were told not to comment to the media.

The retailer is negotiating with creditors and facing reorganizing under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Bloomberg News reported this month. It has at least $643 million in debt and has struggled to keep up with competition.

The retailer is owned by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners and has been at work on an operational improvement plan including e-commerce initiatives and store remodeling, Reuters reported.

A third Omaha Sports Authority store, at L Street Marketplace, closed in 2014, when the shopping center leased its space to Cost Plus World Market and BuyBuy Baby.
