Warren Buffett’s newspaper company said Tuesday it has acquired two Virginia newspapers, the Martinsville Bulletin and the Franklin News-Post in Rocky Mount, from Haskell Newspapers.

The buyer is BH Media Group, the Omaha-based subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., of which Buffett is chairman and CEO. The terms of the purchases were not disclosed.

The Bulletin sells 12,250 newspapers daily and 14,700 on Sundays in Martinsville, Collinsville and elsewhere in southwest Virginia’s Henry County. The nearby News-Post publishes three times a week, with 5,100 copies in Rocky Mount and other communities in Franklin County.

The Haskell family had acquired the Bulletin in 1948. Its publisher, George Harris, said that the purchase is “good for our employees, our readers and the area.” The paper is committed to local news and the community it serves, he said.

Terry Kroeger, CEO of BH Media, said, “We look forward to the opportunity to continue the tradition of community-minded journalism carried on by the Haskell family for nearly 70 years.”

BH Media owns newspapers in 11 states, including the Omaha World-Herald and eight other newspapers in Virginia. Its 31 daily newspapers have a Sunday circulation of about 1.15 million copies.
