Dining Notes: Second Charleston's fires up the grill

 


This weekend at the Village Pointe Farmers Market, shoppers will be able to take in more than just fresh veggies.

Metropolitan Community College culinary arts students will be staging the 2013 Iron Chef Metro competition starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Six teams of culinary students will compete in three rounds featuring an appetizer, an entree and a dessert made from ingredients available at the market.

The public is invited to try the dishes and serve as judges. Judge tickets are $25, and anyone can participate. The proceeds support Tri Omega, a professional and social fraternity for culinary students enrolled in MCC's Institute for the Culinary Arts.

No sitting still at Caffeine Crawl

The Caffeine Crawl — a national event for coffee lovers — is coming to Omaha.

Coffee and tea shops around the city will have presentations and free samples as part of the event, which is based in Kansas City and will travel to eight cities this year.

Participating shops include Accelerando Coffee House, Aromas Coffeehouses in both the Old Market and Benson, Beansmith Coffee, Culprit Cafe and Bakery, Omaha Bicycle Company, the Tea Smith and Urban Abbey.

Tickets for the event are $25. The tour begins at the Beansmith at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19. Participants can choose from one of four routes.

Cantina Laredo reaches for freezer for new cocktail

Margaritas made using sorbet are the newest cocktail creation at Cantina Laredo.

The new Mango-Tamarind Citrus Freeze, Caramelized Pineapple and Superfruit Chiller drinks are made with Haagen-Dazs sorbet. The Mango-Tamarind Citrus Freeze is made with Herradura reposado tequila, Cointreau orange liqueur and tamarind. The Caramelized Pineapple combines Herradura reposado tequila, Cointreau orange liqueur and caramelized pineapple over lemon sorbet. And the Superfruit Chiller combines fresh blueberry, pomegranate and raspberry sorbet, Mount Gay Eclipse rum and Cointreau orange liqueur.

Culinary mag features Nebraska, Iowa dairies

Two local dairy farmers are featured in the latest issue of Saveur magazine.

Branched Oak Farm near Lincoln and Milton Creamery in Milton, Iowa, are both featured in the August/September issue, which is on newsstands now.

Ashland winery brings home the gold

Cellar 426, a winery in Ashland, Neb., won two national awards for its Uplifting Wine, a lightly sweet white made from Traminette grapes.

The wine won a double gold medal at the Indy International Wine Competition and a gold medal at the Mid America Wine Competition.

The Indy competition is organized by Purdue University and included more than 2,000 wines from 39 states and 14 countries; 135 wines won a double gold medal.

The Mid America Competition focuses on wines from 16 Midwestern states. The winery also won a bronze medal for its Rocky's Red wine; it's a semisweet red made from Chambourcin grapes.

Cellar 426 opened in Ashland in May 2012 and is at 1402 Dennis Dean Road.
