People can turn in their expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs at a Drug Take Back Day event Saturday.

Omaha police officers will be at four locations Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect pills and patches. According to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, liquids, needles or sharps can’t be accepted.

The locations are: Hy-Vee at 132nd Street and West Dodge Road, Hy-Vee at 90th Street and West Center Road, Walgreens at 24th and Vinton Streets and Walgreens at 30th and Lake Streets.

Last year, people across the nation turned in 460 tons of prescription drugs at 5,800 sites.

Officials say medicine at home is susceptible to misuse or abuse, and a majority of abused prescription drugs are taken from family and friends.
