Researchers have discovered in teenagers a condition called fatty liver disease, which normally is found in older people who are overweight or obese, heavy drinkers or have chronic conditions such as hepatitis.

Fatty liver disease, which occurs when fat builds up to become more than 10 percent of the liver’s weight, can lead to inflammation and scarring. In serious cases, when cirrhosis of the liver occurs, it can lead to liver failure and even death.

Today’s teens are the first generation to have high enough rates of overweight and obesity that we needed to look for fatty liver disease. The lack of information from other generations mean the long-term complications for teens with the disease remained unknown.

Teenagers with basic fatty liver disease often will have no symptoms besides excess weight. Yet they are at risk of metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The liver enzymes can be elevated but sometimes are within normal limits. The only way to find the disease is through a liver biopsy.

The disease is common and under-diagnosed. The treatment is weight reduction.
