Mascot races, face-painting, bounce houses, and free bicycle helmets and water bottles.

And, of course, a sunny day.

There was everything to like Sunday about the Healthy Kids Day at Stinson Park. The annual event is designed to inspire kids to develop a lifelong love of physical activity.

Five-year-old Levi Weaver had a grand time, said his mother, Stephanie Weaver.

“When you’re 5, there’s a lot that entertains you,” she said.

Levi especially enjoyed watching mascots from local teams, such as the Creighton Bluejays and Omaha Storm Chasers, race against each other.

“He thought it was pretty cool that they were racing each other,” Stephanie Weaver said.

Mom enjoyed the day, too.

“The weather was so nice. It was a great opportunity to be outside.”

Skies were sunny and temperatures reached into the 70s. Winds were a bit breezy, gusting to about 20 mph.

The YMCA and the National Safety Council of Nebraska hosted the event. It was part of a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. Children’s Hospital & Medical Center provided the helmets.
