Gail Seaton’s exercise routine has changed over time.

She started with organized sports, shifted to running and finally settled into a comfortable gym routine.

But her son Evan kept pestering her to try something new. He wanted her to join him at CrossFit Omaha.

He bought her CrossFit clothes for her birthday. He gave her new workout shoes for Christmas.

She’d never tried the sport. It would be embarrassing, she thought.

But then again, how long was her adult son, freshly out of college, going to want to spend time with her at the gym?

A year later, Seaton gave in.

“I went from literally being nauseous every day because I was so nervous about the whole thing to it basically being the place I want to be every single day,” said Seaton, 53.

The Omaha woman is in the gym five days a week. She’s taken to scheduling her workouts like she would a meeting at work. That’s a practice she’s kept up with since her two sons were little.

When her boys were growing up, she often felt like she was running out of time. There were dishes to put away, loads of laundry to be done and errands to tackle. But she’d put the housework aside and squeeze in a brisk run. As the boys got older, she’d hit the gym after their bedtime.

“Do what you can, when you can, and don’t think that if it’s not an hour, it’s not a workout,” Seaton said. “Even something quick is better than nothing.”

Q: When did you start working out and why?

A: I had played sports in high school, and in the ’80s and early ’90s, I was a runner. Later, I joined a gym and started lifting and doing circuit training. In 2012, my son Evan started asking me to join CrossFit Omaha.

Q: Describe your workouts. How many days per week do you exercise?

A: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, I do regular CrossFit classes. We might do something on the bar, weightlifting, rowing, running or pullups. It’s every possible combination of things you can do. It’s something fresh every day. On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, I take a barbell class for Olympic weightlifting. On Thursdays, I take a core class, and Wednesdays are my yoga day. Sundays, I take off completely.

Q: What is your current fitness goal?

A: Right now, I’m getting ready for my first USA Weightlifting meet in July. It’s called the Big O Barbell Invitational, and it’s only for CrossFit Omaha members. It’s a really low-key way to get experience doing that.

Q: What has been your biggest accomplishment?

A: Putting myself into situations that are out of my comfort zone has been huge for me. The other big breakthrough is figuring out that food is fuel. I used to think I worked out so I could eat. Now, I’ve figured out that I eat so I can work out. If you think about food as fuel, it’s a lot easier to make good choices.

Q: What has been the toughest hurdle and how did you overcome it?

A: Starting. I moved from a kind of exercise I was comfortable with into another kind that I was really nervous about.

Q: What helps you stay on track?

A: I love our gym. I love my people. I love our CrossFit Omaha family, and if I am not there, I feel like I am missing out. I schedule (my workout) as a priority. I don’t have to work out. I get to work out. It’s my treat at the end of the day when I get to see all my friends and have some fun.

Q: What is your gym pet peeve?

A: Hotel gyms.

Q: What do you do when you aren’t in the gym?

A: My husband and I both work a lot. I love my job. I bake paleo. I watch my sons coach.

Q: What is the piece of equipment, supplement, clothing, etc. that you can’t live without?

A: My recovery tool kit. I can hang with a 20-something in a workout. I can’t recover like a 20-something. My recovery routine is what keeps me in the gym. I have every recovery gadget there is. I also need coffee and chalk.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their fitness journey?

A: Start simple. Set a specific goal. Add a why. Why is that your goal? Every time you want to quit or skip or cheat, remember your why.
