In the two years since Cole Beltz has been climbing at the indoor gym, he’s felt stronger than he ever did going to a traditional gym.

“I really don’t like a gym and weightlifting,” Beltz, 36, said. “I’ve gotten a lot stronger climbing than I ever did lifting weights.”

The Omaha man moved from beginner to intermediate climber quickly, but plateaued before reaching the advanced stage.

Now he’s in the climbing gym three times a week with his wife and 11-year-old son.

Q: When did you start working out and why?

A: I started climbing two years ago. I’d seen climbing on YouTube, and then my brother told me to come try it.

Q: Describe your workouts. How many days per week do you exercise?

A: I won a competition recently. It was fun.
