African Grasslands - meerkat

A meerkat peeks out of a log in the African Grasslands exhibit at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.

The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium opens its $73 million, 28-acre African Grasslands today. We’ve been counting down to the opening with facts about the exhibit.

One grand opening: Initially planned to open in two phases — exhibits west of the lagoon first, then exhibits east of the lagoon — the African Grasslands now is having one grand opening. Donor support accelerated the timeline for exhibits east of the lagoon, including lions, cheetahs and more, allowing the zoo to drop the curtain all at once on its most ambitious project ever.
