Tanner Lee

Nebraska's Tanner Farmer helps up Tanner Lee after he was upended during the third quarter.

Three quick takes by World-Herald columnist Tom Shatel following Nebraska's 21-17 loss to Northern Illinois on Saturday.

* * *

1. The problems with Nebraska’s offense are like whack-a-mole. They are everywhere and take turns popping up. That’s inconsistency. It’s hard to call plays when you don’t know what you can rely on, but that’s on the OC, too. Tanner Lee looks like a different QB the last two weeks, and I have to think a good part of that is being shell-shocked. NIU defenders were blitzing in free from all angles.

2. De’Mornay Pierson-El is a different guy at receiver. He’s blossoming into a go-to playmaker. Unfortunately, he’s a different guy as a punt returner, too. What happened to the original?

3. I wouldn’t know where to begin to predict the rest of Nebraska’s season. Obviously, the teams get more physical, faster, well-coached, etc. I think it will be week to week, and whether NU can find a matchup it can win and grind it out. All eyes will be on the toughness and leadership on this team. Frankly, that’s an area where this program has struggled in recent years.
