Details of Doc Sadler’s revised contract just came out. And, as Doc told Lee Barfknecht, he didn’t require an agent or attorney and he didn’t question a thing.

You can see why.

Sadler got a $100,000 raise and had his buyout nearly doubled if he is fired without cause. Apparently, that would mean missing the NIT.

The NIT clause is my favorite part of this new contract. You can argue about the raise and say it’s all about appearance and keeping up with the Big Ten coaches. I would say until Doc delivers big boy results, he doesn’t need to be paid big boy bucks.

But here it is, the kicker: a $75,000 bonus if Doc makes the NIT.

Not if he wins the NIT or wins an NIT game. But, merely making the NIT.

That’s like saying Tiger Woods should get a bonus for being in the top 100 of the PGA Tour money list. Why get a bonus for something you usually do?

The NIT is par for the course for Husker Hoops. It doesn’t need to be the carrot. If Nebraska basketball coaches got bonuses for merely making the NIT, they’d be rich men. Come to think of it, some of them are.

Where’s the urgency of this program? Doc says he wants to win an NCAA tournament game. But if he happens to fall short, well, heck, he’s going to get rewarded anyway.

Meanwhile, you gotta love Doc saying he’s had other chances to go, but he’ll stay if the people of Nebraska still believe in him.

Husker Hoops won’t ever make the next step until higher expectations are put in place. New buildings help, but they alone don’t do it. There have to be higher standards. There has to be urgency.

When opposing crowds chant, “N-I-T, N-I-T” it’s supposed to hurt. At Nebraska, it won’t hurt the pocket book.
