The initial shock of tearing up his right knee meant Baker Steinkuhler would miss the Big Ten championship game and Capital One Bowl. The second part of it for the Nebraska defensive tackle is what’s happening now.

Steinkuhler is digging into his rehab as some teammates and others around college football are planning for all-star games and even the NFL Combine.

I asked Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis about Steinkuhler’s challenge Tuesday, and Papuchis said the three-year starter has so much on film already that NFL scouts and personnel know what he can do.

“He’s going to have some work ahead of him, but one thing about Baker is that he’s tough and determined and as strong-willed of a guy as I know,” Papuchis said. “If a guy’s going to come back, Baker would be the kind of guy.”

Steinkuhler, Rex Burkhead and Sean Fisher will be in Omaha on Thursday night to receive Husker senior awards at the Outland Trophy banquet. We’ll have more on Steinkuhler in Wednesday’s paper.
