The Maxwell family usually donates anonymously.

But this year, after talking with their two adult children, Meg and Rob Maxwell decided to have their names printed in the list of donors to Goodfellows, The World-Herald’s charity.

Along with their $2,500 donation, the Ainsworth, Nebraska, couple listed other names, too — those of Andrew and Ashley Ford, siblings who died in separate crashes within a week of each other in the spring of 2009.

Ashley was 16 when she died in a crash on her way to Ainsworth High School. Just a week later, 21-year-old Andrew was killed in a collision on U.S. Highway 20.

The deaths hit the town of Ainsworth hard, Rob Maxwell remembers. His daughter, now 22, was good friends with Ashley in high school.

“This year, we just decided as a family that we ought to do something to remember them, to give in their memory,” Maxwell said. “It was a devastating tragedy, and we still think of the family.”

The Maxwells chose Goodfellows because none of the money donated is kept for administrative costs.

“It’s our holiday tradition to support local charities, and Goodfellows is a great cause,” Maxwell said.
