Veterans Day

Several events and closings are planned to recognize Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Closings and Observances

There is no mail delivery, no Omaha parking meter payment required and Omaha and Council Bluffs libraries are closed on Saturday. Garbage pickup and The World-Herald newspaper delivery schedules will remain the same.

Events on Veterans Day

Veterans Day parade: The 18th annual Nebraska’s Official Veterans Parade "Defenders of Freedom" will begin with an Air Force flyover at 10 a.m. and conclude about noon. The parade begins east of Mission Avenue and Jackson Street and will travel down Mission Avenue. The last-known Tuskegee Airman in Nebraska, Robert D. Holts, 93, of Bellevue, will serve as parade grand marshal. The Veterans Day Parade is sponsored by the Greater Bellevue Area Chamber of Commerce and includes veterans from most recent wars and conflicts. For more information, go to

Memorial Park Observance: The American Legion Post 1, 7811 Davenport St., will host an observance at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park, 6005 Underwood Ave. The event includes a presentation of colors and wreath-laying ceremony near the park’s memorial columns. Speakers include retired U.S. Army Sgt. Daniel Falcon, Gold Star father Lonnie Ford, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. and current U.S. Rep.Don Bacon, retired Brig. Gen. Steve Ritchie and U.S. Strategic Command Commander and Gen. John E. Hyten. A luncheon will take place at the legion post following the event. The event is free; donations are accepted.

Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum Veterans Day Program: Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum, 28210 West Park Highway in Ashland, Nebraska, will host a Veterans Day program and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program includes the posting of the colors by Ashland Legion Post 129; keynote by Maj. Cory Kuehn, Minot Air Force Base 740th Missile Squadron assistant director of operations; and a tour of Boeing EC-135 “Looking Glass.” Veterans are encouraged to attend in uniform. The program and lunch are free for all museum guests. Museum admission is free for all military veterans; general admission rates apply for nonmilitary members. Advanced registration is required. Honoring our Heroes: See the dedication of the largest mural commemorating veterans of Nebraska and visit the Veterans Memorial Building, 810 1st Corso in Nebraska City. The dedication is at 11 a.m. in Memorial Way, on Main Street between 8th and 9th Streets. The Veterans Memorial Building will host an exhibit, featuring 150 displays honoring veterans from World War I to present. This display is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 11 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 12. Admission is free.

Honor and Remember Flag Presentation Ceremony: VFW Post 8334, 5083 S. 136th St., will host a Veterans Day program and flag presentation in honor of Paul S. (Steve) Goc Jr. who was killed in action on June 14, 1969 in Vietnam. The 10 a.m. program includes color guard presentation, invocation, history of the Honor and Remember Flag, historical excerpts and the reading of Goc Jr. letters home.

Bellevue American Legion event: American Legion Post 331, 4830 S. 21st St. in Bellevue, hosts its annual veterans hot roast beef dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance and $9 at the door.

Gretna American Legion event: Sons of the American Legion and Gretna American Legion Post 216 will host this free breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. at Billy’s Gretna Cafe, 20596 Highway 370 in Gretna.

Veterans Memorial Garden Veterans Day program: Veterans Memorial Garden Auld Pavilion, 1650 Memorial Drive in Lincoln, will host a guest speaker and patriotic music at 11 a.m.

Glenwood Veterans Day program: American Legion Post 141, 104 N. Vine St. in Glenwood, Iowa, will host a traditional observance at the Mills County Courthouse, 418 Sharp St., at 11 a.m. The Legion Family Annual Ham and Bean Feed with ham and bean soup, homemade chicken noodle soup, chili, cornbread, vegetable soup and dessert starts at 6:30 p.m.

Free goods and services

For all veterans and current military members with valid military ID or proof of service:

Applebee’s will offer a free meal from a limited menu on Nov. 11 at all locations.

American Family Care, 4004 N. 132nd St., Suite 101, will offer free flu shots on Nov. 11.

Bonefish Grill will offer a free Bang Bang Shrimp.

Bruegger’s Bagels will offer a free small drip coffee at all locations. No purchase necessary.

Denny’s, 3509 S. 84th St., will offer a free Grand Slam breakfast on Friday from 5 a.m. to noon.

Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St., will offer free admission to veterans and their family members Friday through Nov. 12.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers will offer a free combo meal coupon. The coupon can be redeemed through Nov. 30.

Golden Corral, 1511 Gregg Road in Bellevue, will offer a free meal on Nov. 13 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Great Clips locations will give veterans and active-duty service members a free haircut Nov. 11 through Dec. 31. Customers who stop in for a service can get a free haircut card to give to a veteran.

Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, 3701 S. 10th St., will offer free gate admission to all veterans and their immediate families on Veterans Day.

Hy-Vee Supermarket locations will offer a free breakfast buffet to all veterans and active-duty military members from 7 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St., will offer a free gift and 10 percent off purchases in the Hitchcock Museum between Wednesday and Nov. 12 to those with a military family membership card. Military family members will also receive two complimentary nonalcoholic beverages and two desserts in Cafe Durham.

The Loess Hills Harley-Davidson dealership, 57408 190th St. in Pacific Junction, Iowa, will offer free T-shirts to the first 50 veterans from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 11.

Muscle Maker Grill, 2835 S 170th Plaza, will offer one free meal on Nov. 11.

Omaha Lancers will offer $9 tickets to all past and present military members on Nov. 11. The Lancers’ game at Ralston Arena, 7300 Q St., begins at 7:05 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Ralston Arena box office.

Red Robin will offer a free Red Tavern Double Burger and bottomless steak fries at its Omaha and Papillion locations on Nov 11.

Red Lobster will offer a free appetizer or dessert on Nov. 11.

Russell Speeder’s Car Wash, 11818 West Dodge Road, will provide free car washes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 11.

Texas Roadhouse locations will offer a free lunch for active or retired U.S. military veterans from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 11. Choose one of 10 meals.
