The plan was just to enjoy a summer vacation in California: eat at some good restaurants, visit the Getty Observatory, do some hang-gliding, that kinda thing.

But like much else in life, vacations have a tendency to shoot off into unexpected detours, which is how David Broyles — a 54-year-old Omahan — found himself wearing an orange suit and green top hat on a popular game show.

Broyles — who will appear on CBS’s “Let’s Make a Deal” at 2 p.m. Friday — was visiting California in July with his younger twin brothers, Mike and Dan Broyles, 50.

The twins were ticking off their bucket list items, one of which happened to be being a game show contestant. So the three Broyles brothers rented costumes and got into the show’s audience, and David ended up being selected.

“Growing up,” David said, “we lived on game shows like ‘Let’s Make a Deal.’ ”

The show, which was rebooted in 2009 with host Wayne Brady, invites costume-wearing contestants to make a deal with the host. Those skilled in the art of the deal walk away with some fine prizes. Those who aren’t end up with a “zonk,” a useless prize.

Though the episode was filmed about six months ago, Broyles and his brothers haven’t been able to reveal how he did on the show.

“It’s been a tough secret to keep,” he said.

It’ll be nice to be able to talk about it. Broyles works as a computer analyst at a local IT firm, and he and a few coworkers have reserved a break room to watch the show Friday afternoon.

Whether he won big or walked away with a “zonk,” he at least had a good time, he said.

“If you ever had a dream to be on your favorite game show, you’ve got to make it happen,” Broyles said. “They’re a riot.”
