Loessfest is an annual event celebrating all things Council Bluffs. Because of flooding, Loessfest has been canceled this year, but the city is planning a different communitywide celebration.

Loessfest has been canceled due to flooding.

The popular free festival, held each Memorial Day weekend at Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs, tried to reschedule this year’s event to Labor Day, but flood damage was too severe to hold the event at the park along the Missouri River.

Council Bluffs city officials announced the cancellation Monday. The city also announced that a “different community-wide celebration” is being planned for Bayliss Park on Labor Day weekend as a replacement for Loessfest.

Loessfest had been scheduled for Aug. 30 through Sept. 1. Past performers included the Beach Boys, Three Dog Night, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Chicago.

Vincent Martorello, director of parks and recreation for the City of Council Bluffs, said he’s confident the park will be restored once flooding subsides.

The event is the second to be canceled in as many weeks. River’s Edge Taco Fest also has been canceled for 2019.
