Eric Church

Eric Church plays the first night of his Double Down tour at CHI Health Center Omaha.

Eric Church came for two nights.

And he promised up front they would be different.

But how different were they?

On the Double Down tour, the country star will play two nights with two distinct setlists. Each features about 35 songs and about a 20-minute intermission.

Church kicked off his tour in Omaha, and he'll bring the epic show to St. Louis on Friday and continue to Boston, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Chicago and many more sites for two nights each.

So what's the difference between each night?

It turns out: A whole lot.

On night one of the tour in Omaha, Church played the first set and, after intermission, said that's where things will change every night. He proceeded to call multiple "audibles" through the show that included covers and rarities. (Read the full recap right here.)

On night two, it wasn't the same set with a few changes. It was an almost entirely different experience.

Of the many songs played over the two nights, only 13 titles overlapped. The other 20 songs played each night were totally different.

"If you went to both nights you heard everything you wanted to hear. I can't recall one song that we wanted to hear and didn't from either show," said Justin Dvorak, who went to both Omaha concerts with his wife, Emily.

The weekend's shows were their fourth and fifth times seeing Church, and Dvorak said the second show was one of the best.

"I felt Saturday the crowd was into it more," he said. "Played quite a few covers ... plus some old stuff that he rarely plays anymore like 'Sinners Like Me.' Didn't leave disappointed, that's for sure.

The overlapping songs included tunes from his new album and fan favorites that might cause a riot if he skipped: "Smoke a Little Smoke," "Hangin' Around," "Drink In My Hand," "Give Me Back My Hometown," "Record Year," "Desperate Man," "Pledge Allegiance to the Hag," "Some of It," "Jack Daniels," "Higher Wire," "These Boots," "Springsteen" and "Holdin' My Own."

It's not too hard for Church to pull off such a feat, considering how much solid material he has.

What's interesting to me is that Church doesn't actually have that many big hits. He has two No. 1 songs and 15 total in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100, far fewer than other in the upper echelon of country stars.

But Church has become one of country's most bankable stars, mostly because he built a giant fanbase at the same time he wrote so many dang good songs.
