For his second film, Omaha director Alexander Payne took on “Election,” a novel by Tom Perrotta. Filmed mostly at Papillion-La Vista High School, the movie was released 20 years ago.
At 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Alamo Drafthouse Midtown will host a screening and discussion of the film and novel for its Novel Pictures Book Club with the Omaha Public Library.
Alamo Midtown will also screen “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
‘Rumble’ looks at Native American influence on rock
Blues guitarist Mato Nanji of Indigenous will be on hand for a screening of “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World.”
The film is a look at the native influence in rock ’n’ roll, and the screening will double as a benefit for the Toy Drive For Pine Ridge, which brings Christmas toys to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The screening will take place at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Free documentary screening
Film Streams will host a free screening of “Highway of Tears,” a documentary investigating the disappearance and murder of 18 girls, many of them from First Nations communities, along a remote stretch of highway in British Columbia.
The movie will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater. A panel discussion will follow.
Great Directors at Film Streams
Film Streams’ latest Great Directors series kicked off last week. This 12-film series features Yasujiro Ozu, and “Late Spring” will be screened at the micro-screen at Dundee Theater on Sunday, Monday and May 2.
The series continues with screenings of “Early Summer,” “The Flavor of Green Tea,” “Early Spring,” “Equinox Flower,” “A Story of Floating Weeds,” “Floating Weeds,” “Late Autumn” and “An Autumn Afternoon.”
Two of Ozu’s silent films, “Dragnet Girl” and “I Was Born, But...,” will receive scores from local musicians. Coupler will score “Dragnet Girl” on May 13. Dan McCarthy will score “I Was Born, But...” on May 25 and 28.
