In a cut-for-time sketch on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend, Nebraska got some attention.
Well, our “accent” did, at least.
The skit takes place during the rehearsal of a new Broadway play “A Shout Unscreamed.”Â
The play, set in a suburban home in Nebraska, calls for some Midwestern accents from host Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is British, and cast member Cecily Strong, whose character is.
And if you’re from Nebraska, or anywhere in the Midwest really, you know that in order to achieve this “accent,” they would simply need to speak with a normal American accent — with no discernible drawl or twang.
But instead, when the pair start reading their lines, we’re introduced to a hilariously exaggerated accent that more resembles a caricature of the Deep South than Nebraska.
Now, Waller-Bridge — writer and creator of the Emmy-winning shows “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve” — can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned. So this sketch didn’t come even close to offending me — a Midwestern boy, born and raised.

But it is, nevertheless, hard to tell what they were trying to say in the scene, if they’re trying to say anything at all. Is this a joke about what Brits believe Midwesterners sound like? Is it a jab at the Midwest for sounding different? Is it just nonsensical humor that is solely meant to be silly and fun? (The last one is where my money is.)
Any way you interpret it, it’s still one of the funniest sketches from the episode, and it didn’t even get airtime.
At least it lives on, on the Internet.Â

Unfunny ignorant Saturday Night Live east coast tools.
LOL!!
SNL has been garbage for over 2 decades. Liberal trash writing and the comedic talent is weak.
SNL is hit or miss and pretty much always has been. When you have a President who is so outrageous it makes it harder to parody an actual criminal clown show.
When you have a 100% liberal media, Hollywood, and liberals like you that have these thoughts, the rest of the country comes around and is ready to put your stupid politics and humor (I guess you call it humor) to bed. Good night 2020 losers!
Bob Jones, why the vitriol over a comedy show? Are you angry about everything all the time? I thought the sketch was just silly - and made fun of British actors rather than Nebraskans. But even so, if you keep your anger turned up to 100% all the time, you’ll probably have a stroke.
Just explaining what this show has turned into. Not hard to figure out. I have no anger. Anger does not cause strokes.
Wrong thinking, Bob. Anger cam be a factor.

Nuts! Big finger -small keys -being in a bit of a rush. ... Should be "can be a factor"
Ohhh Bobby...registered republican since 1992....nothing liberal about this sketch or wanting a respectable admirable person at the head of our government.
Not until 1998 when I turned 18. Explaining what this show has turned into. See my original post, watch the show, and see where I am coming from. He is the most respectable admirable person we have had since Reagan. Turn off the CNN Mike and form an opinion of your own.

Leave It To WHOLLY IGNORANT ButtHurt SnowFlakes To WHOLLY MISS "The Point" And Start GOOSE-STEPPING Their Way To a "Make America Funny Again" *FAKE COMEDY IMPEACHMENT*...
That Said; As One "Debbie Gilliam", 8th-Grade Classmate, Opined LONG AGO: "[WE] Don't Really Have AN ACCENT - Other Than [WE] *PERSISTENTLY* Drop Our *Gs*...
Ah'm Thinkin' She Was *Right*...
Not exactly a gut-buster but I found it humorous. I saw it more as a dig on actors than the "Nebraska" accent.
I'm betting Bob didn't even bother to watch the video before posting his comment.
Nope, I already know what they are going to say. Liberals are so predictable. Plus not funny so not hard figure out what rubbish they will say.
So you saw 'SNL' in the headline, opened up the article to not even bother watching the scene the article is about .. probably not even reading the article itself, to find that nobody had posted anything positive or negative, just to spew your negative bile ... for what reason? Just to let anyone else who looks here know you don't like SNL? So what! Are you just whiling away the time before Bingo starts at your old folks' home? I think Lora has you pegged.
My post was just explaining what SNL is. She could not be more wrong. I am a 38 year old Conservative. I love that you liberals think you can form everyone into there little groups. Like may of your guesses you guessed wrong again.
"Unfunny ignorant Saturday Night Live east coast tools." does not explain what SNL is, it just demonstrates your negativity of something you don't like.
Ok, so I got it wrong on your being a geriatric with little else to do but lash out at that with which he is upset at. It would be great if you would stop acting like one and post some initial statements of some substance.
Kevin I would agree with you. Mildly funny and not really a shot NE.
Actually many folks especially women in small towns have a discernible accent in Nebraska. Go to any small town cafe in our fair state. You will hear it !
Yeah, not sure how you could read that as making fun of Nebraskan accent. It's clearly about British actors being used because that's the in thing right now, and they have no clue what a Midwest accent is. Everyone but the two Brits was getting frustrated with them.
Yeah, not super funny, but then again, that's probably why it got cut.
