This little piggy went home ... to a new home, that is.
Last week, Omaha Police Officer Joel Strominger rescued a small piglet — later named "Babe"— who was found running loose in traffic on Interstate 680 at 72nd Street near Cunningham Lake.
It is believed that the little male pig fell from a moving truck. Omaha police turned the piglet over to Nebraska Humane Society animal control officers, who wrapped him in a blanket and took him to the shelter.
Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese said the animal suffered some road rash, other scrapes and abrasions on his legs, abdomen and face, and some soft tissue damage to one of his legs. Humane Society staffers cleaned his wounds and treated the leg injury.
Wiese said the piglet was a livestock breed, not a domestic breed such as a pot-belly pig. He was adopted by the owners of the Old Poor Farm, an animal sanctuary in Nickerson, Nebraska, that provides long-term care for disabled animals and birds.
The piglet will be used for educational purposes, Wiese added.
"Pigs are very smart and can be taught lot of activities," Wiese said.
Babe was the third piglet brought to the Humane Society this year that had fallen from a vehicle. Like Babe, the two other piglets were also livestock breeds that were adopted by rural families.
"To have three in one year isn't unheard of, but it's not super common either," Wiese said.
