The Papillion-La Vista school board approved a new contract with teachers Monday night that will raise pay next year an average of 3.24 percent.

The increase is 3.5 percent when benefits are included.

The 2016-17 contract with the Papillion-La Vista Education Association covers 872 employees.

The 190-day contract establishes a base salary of $35,365 for a new teacher with a bachelor's degree, up from $35,000 this school year.

The base salary for a teacher with a master's degree will be $41,731, up from $41,300 this year.

Teachers will pay higher deductibles for health insurance. Those enrolling in the traditional health insurance plan will pay an annual deductible of $900, up from $750 this year. The deductible for the high-deductible health plan will rise from $3,100 to $3,500.

The board also approved an increase of approximately 1 percent in the extra-duty stipends teachers receive for coaching sports and activities.

For example, the standard stipend for the head football coach will be $7,250. The senior high cheerleading coach will start at $3,360 and the debate coach at $3,890.
