Lincoln artist Margaret Berry is the first Cornhusker Artist in Residence.
The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel announced Tuesday that Berry will move into the new studio and gallery space on the main level of the hotel at 333 S. 13th St. on April 1. Berry was one of six finalists for the program.
During her year of residency, Berry will spend 30 hours weekly in an on-site studio, creating pieces, hosting gallery nights and networking with guests. She will create a piece to be permanently on display at the hotel.
Berry is a studio artist and teacher who previously served as executive director of the Lincoln Arts Council and was the first education director at the Lux Center.
Her "encaustic" artwork melds beeswax, damar resin and pigment. She uses a variety of torches to fuse wax layers of color and texture, sometimes incorporating oil paint, collage and photography into her work.
The Artist-in-Residence program was created by hotel owner Marcus Hotels & Resorts in 2009 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. The Cornhusker's program will feature a new artist each year, accepting applications in the fall for a new residency in April.
