Freshman Brecht lifts Mavs with late jumper

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: UNO 60, IPFW 58

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A week after losing at the buzzer at home, the UNO women won in a similar fashion Thursday night on the road.

Freshman Ellie Brecht banked in a shot with three seconds left to give the Mavs a 60-58 win over IPFW.

The win improves UNO to 11-9 on the season and 4-4 in Summit League play. Last Thursday, the Mavs lost 67-65 when Oral Roberts hit a jumper with two seconds remaining.

UNO had to rally against the Mastodons to pull out the win.

IPFW (4-17, 0-8), which dropped its 11th straight, scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to take its biggest lead of the game at 4841 with seven minutes left.

UNO sliced its deficit to 5350 with just more than three minutes left before Abi Lujan scored seven consecutive points in a 43-second span to move the Mavs up 57-53.

Lujan finished with 10 points, with all 10 coming in the final 11 minutes.

Mikaela Shaw tacked on a free throw at the 1:56 mark to make it 58-53 before IPFW scored five straight to pull even. The Mastodons tied it when Allyson Bunch hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left — that gave Bunch her only points of the night.

The Mavs got two offensive rebounds to extend their final possession before Brecht connected on the game-winner. She finished with eight points off the bench.

Shaw led the Mavericks with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double this season.

Keanna Gary led IPFW with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Mastodons outrebounded UNO 41-33, but they shot 32.2 percent from the field.

UNO stays on the road and faces Western Illinois at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
