LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Jared Wegner belted a grand slam while Jason Allbery and Garrett Gilbert each added a pair of hits Saturday as Creighton beat Arkansas-Little Rock 13-8.

The Bluejays (2-0) led 8-2 after a five-run fourth when Wegner, a freshman from Kearney, cleared the bases when he drove a 3-2 pitch from Arkansas-Little Rock reliever Aaron Funk over the left-field fence.

CU has scored double-digit runs in each of its first two games. Allbery and Gilbert each had two RBIs, and designated hitter Jake Holton walked and scored three times.

Allbery doubled home a run in a three-run second and followed with another RBI double in the fourth. With CU leading 12-2, the Trojans

(0-2) scored five in the bottom of the fifth to chase Bluejay starter Denson Hull, who struck out six and allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Freshman Paul Bergstrom (1-0) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to earn his first career win. Six Bluejay pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters.

The Jays will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

UNO shut out by USC

LOS ANGELES - John Beller struck out five in seven shutout innings Saturday as USC rolled to an 11-0 win over UNO. Chase Bushor had a two-run double during an eight-run fourth as the Trojans (2-0) pulled away early. Friday night, USC scored twice in the eighth and ninth innings to rally past UNO 6-5.

The Mavericks (0-2) mustered only three hits against Beller (10). Thomas DeBonville and Keil Krumwiede each had singles in the first, and Breyden Eckhout had a two-out double in the fifth.

UNO starter Spencer Koelewyn (01) allowed four runs and walked six in three innings.

The Mavericks will look to avoid the sweep in the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
