Nebraska's bats heat up to rebound from loss

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — MJ Knighten went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs as Nebraska beat San Diego State 3-1 in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Kaylan Jablonski also hit a solo homer for the Huskers (10-2), and Cassie McClure (5-1) pitched a complete game and struck out four batters.

Knighten's homer was her eighth in 12 games this season. The junior from Buena Park, California, is hitting .525 with 18 RBIs.

The Huskers will wrap up the tournament at 11 a.m. Sunday against No. 9 Washington.

Eck pitches Jays to split

DENTON, Texas — Sydnee Eck struck out 11 batters Saturday to lead Creighton to a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State in the North Texas Invitational.

The Bluejays (5-7) lost 11-1 to North Texas in their second game of the day.

Eck (4-3) scattered six hits and one run in seven innings in the first game, striking out eight of the first 10 batters she faced. She struck out the side in both the second and third innings.

Jen Daro hit a single in the top of the third inning, scoring Kelsey Allender and giving the Jays a 1-0 lead. It was Daro's 17th RBI of the season.

Daro later doubled to left field with two outs in the fifth inning, scoring on Allie Reinhart's double.

Creighton starter Michal Hylton (1-1) struggled in the second game, allowing seven runs (three earned) in 21/3 innings. The Mean Green (8-4) scored five runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the third.

North Texas hit three home runs.

Warren keys Maverick sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Nicole Warren totaled a grand slam, a triple and five RBIs as UNO swept two games in the ASU Hornet Tournament on Saturday, beating Howard 13-2 and Alabama State 7-0.

Laura Roecker (3-3) pitched her second shutout of the season and struck out five batters in the win over Alabama State.

The Mavericks (6-8) clubbed 13 hits in the win over Howard, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kelly Pattison, Sydney Hames, Lizzie Noble and Alexis Parker each had a pair of hits for UNO.

The Mavericks finish the tournament at 11 a.m. Sunday against Gardner-Webb.

Bruins remain winless

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Bellevue University softball team dropped to 0-5 on the season after a pair of losses Saturday at the Fayetteville Classic, falling 6-0 to host Evangel and 9-1 to Oklahoma City.

Alex Tooley drove in the lone run of the day for the Bruins with an RBI double against Oklahoma City. Bellevue gave up a grand slam in each contest and surrendered four homers on the day.

The Bruins head to Clermont, Florida, from March 5-11 for 12 games at the National Training Center Spring Games.
