A couple of days after adjusting her free-throw routine, Creighton’s Audrey Faber stood at the foul line needing to make both attempts to force overtime.

She said she really just tried not to think — about anything.

That was the whole purpose behind her midweek free-throw work in practice, anyway. She’d been an 82.6 percent shooter at the stripe during her first three seasons here, but after going just 10-of-19 in the Jays’ last eight games, Faber felt she needed to eliminate the mental clutter.

One dribble, then shoot. That became the new approach.

The tweak paid off.

Faber’s two free throws with four seconds left in regulation tied the game at 54-54. Creighton scored the first seven points of overtime and held on from there for a 66-62 comeback victory over Xavier (10-7, 1-5) Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena.

“I had to make them,” Faber said. “I tried not to overthink it.”

The Jays were fortunate she had that chance.

They didn’t make a field goal during the second quarter — Xavier outscored them 18-2 in that period, taking a 34-21 lead at halftime. The Jays had 11 turnovers at the break. They missed nine straight shots at one point.

And even after settling in and jumping ahead three times, Creighton (10-8, 4-3) ended up relying on some late-game heroics to stay alive.

Freshman Payton Brotzki from Platteview hit a 3-pointer to pull the Jays within 54-52 with 1:09 left in regulation. Xavier then missed a shot, and each team turned the ball over on inbounds passes to set up Faber’s decisive moment.

Faber, who scored all 18 of her points after halftime, pulled up for a midrange jumper and got hacked as she released the shot. Her two free throws tied the game at 54-54.

“I knew she had it,” CU junior Jaylyn Agnew said. “I knew coming down to crunch time, she’d be fine. I was like, ‘I’m not even worried.’”

Xavier did pull within three points twice in the game’s final moments. But senior Jade Owens and sophomore Temi Carda went 3-of-4 from the foul line to complete the comeback.

The victory was important for the Jays, who are looking to pad their résumé with wins as they cling to NCAA tournament at-large hopes. The Musketeers came into Friday’s game ranked No. 162 in the RPI.

But early on, Creighton wasn’t playing with the right mentality, according to the players. The offense was sluggish because it needed better spacing, sharper cuts and stronger screens.

Creighton made the necessary adjustments in time, though.

“I think just our willingness to compete was better after halftime,” Agnew said.

Creighton will host Butler (15-2, 5-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday at D.J. Sokol Arena.
