CINCINNATI — Creighton scored two goals in the second half Friday to pull away for a 3-1 win over Xavier.

The Bluejays (9-2-1 overall) improved to 5-0 in Big East play and are alone atop the conference standings.

Creighton took an early lead against Xavier (4-4-5, 2-2-1) when Sven Koenig scored his Big East-leading seventh goal of the season in the third minute.

Xavier had several scoring chances in the first half but couldn’t convert until Simen Hestnes got the equalizer in the 50th minute.

The Bluejays regained the lead in the 58th minute when Akeem Ward fired a shot toward the far post that was deflected over Xavier’s goalkeeper.

Tor Trosten pushed Creighton’s lead to 3-1 in the 84th minute with his first goal as a Bluejay. Trosten also recorded his first career assist on Koenig’s goal in the first half.

Creighton will stay on the road Tuesday for a 6 p.m. nonconference game at Akron.
