Creighton baseball's Jake Holton named Big East player of the week

Jake Holton comes home to score. Holton was named Big East player of the week for his performance against St. John's.

Creighton junior first baseman Jake Holton was named Big East player of the week Monday after his productive performances at the plate against St. John’s this past weekend.

Holton did most of his damage in the series opener, when he hit a grand slam, added two doubles and drove in six total runs during an 11-0 Creighton win. Holton finished the weekend with six hits in 12 at-bats.

The weekly award is the fourth of the season for Holton, who’s emerged as a legitimate contender for the league’s player of the year honor in his debut season with the Jays. The Santa Barbara City College product leads the Big East in batting average (.482) and on-base percentage (.592) during conference action, while also ranking third in both runs scored (14) and slugging percentage (.714).

Holton and the Jays return to action Tuesday with an 11 a.m. home game against UNO.
